The origins of Audi can be traced back, to 1909 when August Horch founded the company in Zwickau, Germany. Originally known as August Horch Automobilwerke GmbH, Horch eventually. Started a company under his own name. The remaining entity was then renamed Audi Automobilwerke GmbH in 1910. Over time Audi became renowned for its advancements in engineering including innovations, like the 4WD system and the aluminum engine.
1932-1964: Mergers and post-war rebuilding
During the year 1932 Audi joined forces, with Horch, DKW and Wanderer to establish Auto Union AG in Chemnitz, Germany. The factories of Auto Union suffered damage during World War II leading the company to relocate to Ingolstadt, Germany in 1949. In the years Auto Union dedicated its efforts, towards reconstruction and the creation of models notably including the well received Audi F103.
1965-1994: Expansion and growth
In 1965 Volkswagen acquired Auto Union. Reintroduced the Audi brand as a high end division of VW. Over the years Audi broadened its range of products and pioneered innovative technologies such, as the Quattro all wheel drive system and the TDI diesel engine. Additionally the company made strides in motorsports achieving success by winning multiple rally and touring car championships.
1994-2010: Modern era and electric cars
During the 1990s Audi experienced growth. Broadened its range of products by introducing fresh models, like the A3 and the TT. As the 2000s rolled in the company shifted its attention, towards sustainability. Made strides in developing hybrid vehicles.
2010-present: Audi today
In the year 2012 Audi made a groundbreaking move by unveiling their vehicle the Audi R8 e tron. Following that success in 2018 they took another step forward with the release of the Audi e tron, a fully electric SUV.
